How to Tell if a Song Is AI
Three ways to work it out, from quickest to most reliable: listen for the tells, check who's behind the song, and run the file through a detector. None of them is proof alone. Together they usually give you a clear answer.
1. Listen for the tells
These were reliable a year ago and still catch a lot of quick, low-effort tracks:
- Consonants that smear. S, T and K sounds come out soft or hissy, as if the singer is slightly underwater.
- Lyrics that rhyme but don't say anything. Every line fits the beat, and none of them tells you about a place, a person or a moment.
- A mix with no room in it. Every instrument is the same distance away, and the vocal never really breathes.
- Endings that wander. AI songs often fade into a loop, or stop on a chord that doesn't resolve.
The catch: the newest generators fix most of this. If a song passes the ear test, that tells you less than it used to.
2. Check who's behind it
This is where most AI acts give themselves away. In 2025 the band The Velvet Sundown passed a million monthly listeners on Spotify before the people behind it described it as a synthetic project made with AI. The clues were in the profile all along:
- Dozens of releases in a few months, all in the same style
- No tour dates, no live videos, no interviews with a named person
- Social accounts that started around the same time as the music
- Band photos that look like the same render with a different filter
Then check the platform. Deezer labels albums it detects as AI-generated, and Spotify has said it will show AI disclosures in credits when labels supply them. A label settles it; no label settles nothing.
3. Run the file through a detector
If you have the audio file, a detector listens to the sound itself, so renamed files and wiped tags don't fool it. Our AI music detector checks 30 seconds from the middle of the track and gives you a 0–100 score with a plain verdict. Your first check is free.
Use the result like any other clue. A high score plus a profile full of red flags is about as sure as you'll get. A low score on a polished pop track is reassuring, not final.
FAQ
Questions
- Can you hear if a song is AI?
- Not reliably. Newer generators sing in tune, breathe in the right places and mix like a studio. Your ears are good at catching the old tells (smeared consonants, lyrics that rhyme but say nothing), but a clean modern AI track can fool most people.
- Do Spotify or Deezer tell you if a song is AI?
- Deezer marks albums it detects as AI-generated with a label on the album page. Spotify has said it will show AI disclosures in song credits when labels and distributors provide them. Neither covers every track yet, so a missing label doesn't mean a song is human-made.
- How do I tell if an artist is AI?
- Look at the artist, not just the song: a sudden catalogue of dozens of tracks, no live dates, no interviews, social accounts that started last month, and photos that all look like the same render. Two or three of these together are a strong hint.
- What's the fastest way to check one song?
- Run it through a detector if you have the audio file. It's one more signal, not a verdict, and it works best combined with the artist checks on this page.
